Consultation of surgeon-oncologist
A surgeon-oncologist is a specialist who provides consultation, diagnosis and treatment of malignant neoplasms. The specialist also chooses the optimal type of operation required to remove neoplasms.
Neoplasms of the skin and subcutaneous tissue can be removed in our medical center without significant disruption of social and physical activity, and if necessary, after consultation, the patient will be coordinated to a specialized institution to specialized specialists (depending on the established diagnosis).
Skin neoplasms include: common moles (nevi), warts, papillomas, atheromas, lipomas. Removal of moles is not necessary if they do not cause discomfort, if there are no characteristic signs of malignancy. The need to remove warts and papillomas is decided at the consultation of a specialist (after a diagnosis), as they can be relatively harmless and potentially dangerous (they can cause oncological abnormalities). Removal of atheroma and lipoma is not an obligatory operation, since this neoplasm is not dangerous, but it can become inflamed, increase in size (sometimes up to 10-15 cm in diameter) and cause significant cosmetic defects. The sooner these new patterns are removed, the smaller the post-op scar will be.
Types and characteristics of neoplasms
Moles are dense pigmented spots or nodules on the skin, usually congenital and appearing during life, which are benign. They can occur all over the body, even on the scalp, can be absolutely of any shape and size, flat and voluminous, light and dark. The danger of moles is that they can be transformed under the influence of sunlight due to constant injury, they can degenerate into malignant tumors.
Warts and papillomas are also benign neoplasms, but they do not arise because of a congenital factor, but because the papillomavirus enters the human body. Warts are similar to moles, they rise above the surface of the skin, but they are light in color and soft to the touch. Papillomas growing on the outer layer of the skin have a characteristic appearance of finger-shaped elongated flesh-colored processes 2-3 millimeters or more in length.
When a specialist consultation is necessary
It is advisable to consult an oncologist if the neoplasms cause even the slightest discomfort. Removal of papillomas, moles, and warts at the request of the patient is possible even if they interfere only in aesthetic terms. But there are signs that cannot be ignored, even if the neoplasm is in an inconspicuous place and does not create problems with the appearance:
- Occurrence of pain, itching, burning at the location of the formation.
- Increase in size, change in shape, color.
- Occurrence of inflammation.
- Bleeding, non-healing wound, constantly weeping crust.
Removing potentially dangerous moles, warts, papillomas is not in the competence of a cosmetologist. This should be done by an oncologist surgeon, who, if necessary, will send the tissues for histological analysis in order to confirm or deny the malignancy of the neoplasm.
Methods of surgical treatment
There are several modern methods of dealing with skin formations. For example – radio wave removal of neoplasms that have a clear outline and protrude above the surface of the skin. This is a practically painless technique; local anesthesia is sufficient. Its convenience lies in the fact that the patient does not need stitches, and after the procedure, there are no scars or other visible traces of treatment. The device uses the method of converting electric current into radio waves. The slightest layer of altered tissue is removed and the surrounding healthy structures are not affected.
Surgical removal of neoplasms is a classic microoperation, which is performed on suspicion of malignant transformation of the neoplasm and guarantees complete excision of pathological tissues, after which the removed neoplasm is necessarily sent for histological analysis for further more accurate diagnosis. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes up to half an hour. At a significant area of exposure, the edges of the wound are covered with disintegrating threads that minimize the risk of scarring.
Histological examination is an extremely important method of examining removed tissue. Indeed, only as a result of histological examination can a malignant neoplasm be confirmed or refuted. Also, only as a result of histological examination, you can see the edge of the excision of the neoplasm and, accordingly, be sure that the neoplasm is removed correctly and will not bring “surprises” to the patient in the future in the form of a continuation of the disease. And most importantly, only according to the results of histological examination, it is possible to prescribe the correct and timely treatment !!!
Recommendations for the recovery period after surgery
After treatment with the radio wave method, a short-term rehabilitation period will follow, during which it is not recommended to expose the skin to water procedures. Also, you should not visit public beaches, baths, saunas, swimming pools, in general, it is better to limit the contact of the operated area of the body with water. The postoperative wound should be treated only with the means prescribed by the doctor. As the wound heals on the spot, a crust will be formed, which can definitely not be removed on its own, and you have to wait until it comes off naturally, which may take a few days.
After classical surgery, the recovery period is 7-12 days, during which 3-4 dressings may be required depending on the volume of the operation performed. Otherwise, all recommendations are the same as for the radio wave treatment method.
